Today’s youth who do not have even a little knowledge of scriptures and religion have been so influenced by watching some movies and serials that they start comparing Ravana with Shri Ram, considering him good and even their ideal. Such people say that Ravana did not even touch Sita Mata despite keeping her captive for so many days because he was righteous. However, they do not know the reality behind this story. Yes, Ravana had a vast amount of knowledge and was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, but his arrogance, lust, and greed for power led to Ravana’s downfall.
One such incident that contributed to Ravana’s downfall was when he saw Rambha in heaven and tried to take her with him. Rambha opposed this and said that she was going to marry Nal Kuber, son of his elder brother Kuber, making her his daughter-in-law. Yet, ignoring this, Ravana forcibly misbehaved with her. When Nal Kuber learned about this, he cursed Ravana that if he ever touched a woman against her will again, his head would be cut off a hundred times. This curse was the reason why Ravana did not touch Mata Sita.
Furthermore, Ravana also mistreated his wife’s sister, Maya, which led her to curse him, saying that his downfall would be due to his lust for a woman—and this ultimately came true. The lessons from Ravana’s downfall teach us that power and knowledge without wisdom can lead to destruction. The Bhagavad Gita is not just a sacred text to keep in our homes or to swear upon but a guide to implementing wisdom in our lives. By following its teachings, we can avoid the mistakes that led to Ravana’s downfall and walk on the right path.
